Thanks for the excellent tips on learning the guitar and the warning about scams. I’ve always found it beneficial to look in a music store where you can see what you’re buying and get help when you need it.

I’d recommend checking your local freecycle for a free guitar that someone’s getting rid of. Like Scotty says nylon is easy on the fingers for a beginner and a good choice, also though is a lightly strung electric.

Its a sturdy feeling guitar, the truss rod reacts well to adjustments and string tensions, the frets are well dressed, and all the internal wiring is well organized leaving plenty of room for any changes you want to make. The surface of the body is the cheapest part, every thing else.

My suggestion would be to grab a fairly cheap nylon stringed classical guitar to begin with. As a beginner, this will be nice and easy on the fingers. The other thing is, that if you decide that playing the guitar just isn’t for you after a bit of time, it has only been a small investment.

There’s plenty of good online beginners guitar courses out there, just do a bit of research on Google before you purchase and you can’t go wrong.
