My suggestion would be to grab a fairly cheap nylon stringed classical guitar to begin with. As a beginner, this will be nice and easy on the fingers. The other thing is, that if you decide that playing the guitar just isn’t for you after a bit of time, it has only been a small investment.

There’s plenty of good online beginners guitar courses out there, just do a bit of research on Google before you purchase and you can’t go wrong.

If you want to learn guitar properly, throw guitar hero away, grab a real guitar and put the effort and time into learning how to play it. I am sure you will be happy you did!

I also agree that guitar theory is not totally needed for those people who just want to play basic chords notes and songs. However, if you want to become more professional and become a true guitarist, learning all you can about the theory of music will is the only way to go.

This is a great place to learn to play guitar, I have been a member for 6 months now and have learned more than I did in 3 years, the videos are really nice laid out and is easy to follow, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginners guitarist or an advanced guitarist.
